Cup Update from Eddie Broome - cup secretary

Last year the British Athletics League set out to provide a Super Saturday of Cup Finals. The BAL introduced alongside the successful 10 in 100 BAL Cup format, the Jo Smith Cup, an invitation only competition for the top 8 clubs from the previous year’s League.

The two 10 in 100 finals – Plate and Cup – were followed by the Jo Smith and provided a full day of Cup athletics which was covered by Channel 4. The result was an action packed day of athletics and the BAL is looking to repeat the success of last year’s finals again in 2010.

Over 240 invitations have been sent out to both BAL/UKWL and non-BAL/UKWL clubs for this year’s 10 in 100 Cup Competition as well as the invitations to the top 8 clubs from 2009 for the Jo Smith who are Birchfield Harriers, Enfield & Haringey AC, Newham & Essex Beagles, City of Manchester, Shaftesbury Barnet AC, Trafford AC, Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow AC and Woodford Green with Essex Ladies.

In last year’s Finals Woodford Green with Essex Ladies won the Jo Smith and in 10 in 100, the Channel Islands won the men’s Cup, Epsom & Ewell won the women’s Cup with Swindon AC and Kingston winning the men’s and women’s Plate Finals respectively.

This year’s 10 in 100 Semi Finals are due to take place on 24th July 2010 and entries are due in by 13th March 2010. Further entry forms are available on the BAL website www.bal.org.uk. Invites have been sent out to the top 8 clubs for the Jo Smith.
